More News on HTML5 and Enterprise Mobility

by on October 12, 2011

I have worked as an IT Manager in my career, and I know the pain involved with supporting systems that are a chaotic mix of different technologies and integration methodologies.  I think that is one reason I am so drawn to the idea that HTML5 will help simplify enterprise mobility for many IT organizations.  Build once and then use across multiple mobile operating systems and device types.  That is the HTML5 dream!

HTML5 Advancing

A new study from Netbiscuits, a mobile software firm, revealed that a majority of the top-selling 10 smartphones in the United States have adopted HTML5 features.  According to the article, “Between 70% and 90% of the top devices support key HTML5 programming elements including offline Web application capability, a geolocation API, 2D animation rendering and Web storage.

In the last year, HTML5 support is growing for mobile Web development.  Prestigious publishers such as Conde Nast and The New York Times, as well as Apple and Google now support HTML5.  The study found that for accessing mobile sites, the iPhone is the top device, followed by iPod Touch and Android.  “The dominance of Android and Apple still hasn’t solved the fragmentation problem in mobile, however, according to the study.”  A single user experience among all devices is still hindered by differences in hardware, even if all devices run on the latest version of their operating systems. Adobe and HTML5

According to Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch, “Adobe is developing great software around HTML5.  HTML5 can be used to deliver rich experiences on the web and will become ubiquitous across mobile devices and desktop computers.”  Adobe is enhancing Dreamweaver for HTML5.  Lynch also indicates that the HTML5 design tool Adobe Edge has been downloaded by over 100,000 users already.  The most recent version of Edge introduces “interactive capabilities such as looping, hyperlinks, and greater animation control”, according to the Adobe Edge website:

Adobe Acquires PhoneGap

The acquisition is expected to close by the end of October.  The open source platform of PhoneGap enables mobile developers to build cross platform applications with JavaScript and HTML5.  The PhoneGap framework has been downloaded over 600,000 times, resulting in thousands of applications being built.
